Use canvas and sail production tools

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to safely use a range of commonly used hand and power tools in the manufacture of canvas and sail products.

Application

This unit applies to the use of hand, electrical, air and gas energised tools on a range of canvas and sail products and equipment. Work may involve interaction with other people in the workplace including supervisors and production personnel. Work may be conducted in a variety of environments, such as:

operational indoor workplaces

operational outdoor workplaces

on client site

restricted or confined spaces

hazardous or exposed conditions

Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities. Work may require the exercise of independence, discretion and judgement.

The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:

requirements prescribed by legislation, awards, agreements and conditions of employment

standard operating procedures

work instructions

oral, written and visual communication

quality practices, including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section output

housekeeping

tasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control and recycling

This unit requires the application of skills associated with planning and organising for the safe and efficient use of tools used in canvas and sail production to ensure maximum productivity and safety. This unit also requires the ability to apply problem solving strategies to identify any operational faults or problems. Self management skills are applied to ensure workplace and quality standards are achieved.

2.4 Tool settings are determined and tool is adjusted or set for use

3 Prepare work area for tool use

3.1 Safe working environment for tool use is established, including elimination of solvents and other sources of flammable or explosive vapours and removal of flammable materials which might catch fire if tools likely to produce sparks or flame are used

3.2 Work with tools is planned to maximise safety and productivity

3.3 Suitable electrical power outlets, if required, are identified

3.4 Work area is cleared and cleaned to provide work table or benches free of obstructions and allow clear access to machines and equipment

3.5 Barriers or screens are used to keep other personnel at a safe distance or to shield them from sparks, arc flashes, debris, dust or noise

3.6 Suitable floor insulation or residual current devices are provided where electrical tools are to be used in conditions which could present a shock hazard

3.7 Provision for emergency shut down of tool is checked

4 Prepare work piece for tool use

4.1 Work piece is correctly mounted in, or aligned to the tool or machine to be used

4.2 Work piece is securely anchored where necessary to prevent movement

5 Use tools

5.1 Safety equipment is used in accordance with OHS practices and tools are used in accordance with industry and workplace OHS practices

5.2 Electrical tools are safely connected to power supply, gas or air hoses are safely connected to gas/air supplies

5.3 Start up and shut down procedures are safely followed when using electrical or gas operated tools

5.4 Mechanical tool settings, electrical settings and gas pressures are set

5.5 Tools are located in safe positions when not in use

5.6 Safety equipment is used during tool operation in accordance with OHS practices

5.7 Tool operation is monitored and use is discontinued if abnormal operation or other problems are detected

5.8 Knowledge of tools are applied to preform required tasks

6 Maintain and store tools and maintain work area

6.1 Tools, extension cables and hoses are cleaned and stored in accordance with industry and workplace OHS practices

6.2 Abnormal tool operation or other problems are reported in accordance with established workplace practices

6.3 Programmed maintenance of tools which is within the province of the operator is performed

6.4 Work area is cleaned
